The best sun protection for men
Like our taxes and mortgage, the sun is unavoidable. Neglecting to put on a sunscreen is just asking for trouble. Take these preventative measures to avoid a whole lot of hurt later on.
If there’s one piece of information – or “learning” if you prefer marketing wanker speak – you take away from the Mistr website, it’s this. A dodgy haircut or cheap aftershave won’t kill you.
Exposing yourself to sun just might. In fact, 1800 Australians die a year from skin cancer. Men are almost double as likely to be diagnosed. Sorry to kill your buzz but this shit is both real and deadly.
And don’t even start that “but I look great with a tan” crap. There are other, better ways. With a hole in the ozone you can throw a tennis ball through and lifestyle that draws us to the water, the risks rise exponentially.
You can make like friend of MISTR, the magnificently bearded Jimmy Niggles, and grow some face fur to mitigate the risk or better still sign up to the life-saving program he created at beardseason.com.au challenging men to get skin checks and sprout a neck do. Beardseason has amassed 90,000 participants in 24 countries, just as a little bit of trivia for you.
But at the end of the day – sorry, make that the beginning of the day – it all comes back to sunscreen. More of it than you think and pretty much everywhere. Underscore that if you’re a nudist.
Aim for an SPF50 where possible and make sure that you’re protected against both UVA and UVB rays. Water-resistance is a plus too but please don’t think this means one application will do you for a day. It won’t. Put your first layer of sunscreen on before you leave home and another when you hit the beach. Then apply every two hours. Non-negotiable. Make sure you cover the inside of your arms, back of the legs, the soles of the feet and the ears.
Here at MISTR, we love a niche brand, something idiosyncratically chic, which stands apart from the rest of the pack. Charlie Screen is one such brand creating the only specially created SPF face cream for men in Australia.
Another range to be aware of is We Are Feel Good Inc, another Aussie belter which has removed reef-damaging UV filters oxybenzone and octinoxate while still maintaining SPF50+ and has a dedicated offering for sensitive skin.
Last but certainly not least is the you-beaut product No-Dice from Triumph and Disaster which again is oxybenzone free and protects from UVB and UVA rays.
